Matt is researching how landscape evolution during the earliest phases of a continental rift influences the sediment layers deposited in basins as part of his Master of Philosophy at the University of Sydney.
By applying numerical models of landscape evolution and calibrating the results against conceptual depositional models and observations from the Otway Basin in south east Australia, Matt hopes to improve our understanding of these resource rich settings. He’s primarily using Badlands, a software tool developed by the Earthbyte group.
Matt obtained his BSc in Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Technology, Sydney and is currently working for the Geological Survey of Victoria.
Thesis title: Understanding how tectonics and landscape evolution interact to control basin infilling during early rifting: insights for the Early Cretaceous Otway Basin.
